But Shaq’s Jersey Should Be Hung at Staples

April 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Lakers, Uncategorized

Shaquille O’Neal will have played for at least four NBA teams by the time he retires — the Magic, the Lakers, the Heat and the Suns.

But it seems clear where his retired jersey should hang.

In Staples Center.

So, look for a No. 34 — his number in L.A., where 32 (Magic Johnson) and 33 (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) already were retired — to be hoisted up toward the rafters along about 2012, when he finally has given up the game and become the largest deputy sheriff in Florida state history.

Shaq led the Lakers to three championships, he won his one MVP award while with the Lakers. He even shot 62.2 percent (!) from the line over an entire season here (2002-03).

He spent his prime here and a bigger chunk (eight full seasons) of his career than anywhere else.

Lakers fans will be happy to have his number up there. It belongs there, actually.

It does belong there. Shaq fulfilled expectations, actually earned his contract and brought glory back to the Lakers. His jersey retirement should make for a very entertaining ceremony, when it happens. Could be as early as next season.
