I assume this thing has gone viral. But if you haven’t seen the clip of the soccer linesman getting hit in the head by a ball … and losing his toupee in the process … you probably should have a look.
Some unanswered questions here.
Where was this taped? Who was playing? Was the guy actually hurt? Or was he more embarrassed?
What we can figure from the video is that it happened in the U.S. That’s an American football field. Not Canadian, because it doesn’t have the 20-yard-deep end zone.
Wherever it is, it had been raining.
At first I thought the players were college guys, but after watching the start of the clip a few times, the tiny guy defending the ball can’t be more than 17. So I’m thinking high schoolers. And they are on artificial turf, which a few decades ago would have narrowed down the choices, but these days those rubberized fields are everywhere.
You would think a guy standing over on the touchline, that far down the field, must be a linesman, but he has no flag. And he does have a whistle. So, a badly positioned referee? Or maybe one of two in a two-ref game?
And why wear a toupee to officiate a soccer match? To keep your head warm?
The only sound we hear on the tape is the “Ohhh!” from what sounds like two guys, and if you listen closely, what seems like muffled sniggering. And someone (a coach?) saying “relax!” late in the clip.
Anyway, most of us have nightmares about being late for something, or not being able to find someplace … maybe for referees who wear toupees to work, this is the ultimate nightmare. I’d like to think the guy laughed about it later, but I kinda doubt it.
