Not getting enough exotic news in your reading diet?
Check out this blog post from our friend and former colleague Suzie Ahn, who is working with the Peace Corps in Benin. In Africa.
It’s one of those nightmarish events that happen in countries that aren’t run very well. I must say, this sort of thing — kids befriending you so they can rip you off — doesn’t happen in the UAE. It doesn’t.
Crime here is just about nil. Turns out the greatest force for social discipline … is knowing you will lose your job and be sent home to poverty if you get out of line.
And maybe thievery, etc., is just less common on the Arabian Peninsula. Perhaps religion is involved, too. A system of ethics; you don’t take what isn’t yours.
Anyway, look at Suzie’s item. She was so good as a copy editor.
Which reminds me of the Little Copy-Editor Secret: a lot of them are really good writers.
