Today’s List: 10 Destinations

April 26th, 2012 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, Lists, tourism, UAE

Just sitting here thinking of where I would go/visit … if time and money were no obstacle. Places I haven’t yet been.

A fantasy list, I suppose it what it is, because it won’t happen, except in my imagination.

You know the drill: top 10, with my most-like-to-see place at No. 1

10. Lisbon. Remember Casablanca, the greatest movie ever made? Everyone in Casablanca wanted to be on the flight to Lisbon. So do I.

9. Madrid. Maybe make it an Iberian doubleheader with Lisbon? I would spend a lot of time at the Prado and see a bull fight. Fourth most-visited city in the world.

8. The Serengeti. Not that far from where I am now. Would be expensive to do it right. Just want to sit somewhere and watch the herds migrate. I have visions of Out of Africa in my head.

7. Singapore. Allegedly more than a little too structured/uptight, but still …A couple of days should be fine.

6. Christchurch, New Zealand. Never done New Zealand, other than to change planes on the way to Sydney. Also, want to look around at the South Island.

5. Helsinki, Finland. I want to see the Baltic. A French friend said Helsinki is the most boring city in the world. I want to see for myself.

4. Patagonia. Not an exact idea, is it, since it’s a big part of Argentina. I suppose it involves long leisurely driving …

3. Socotra Island. A week ago I didn’t know this place existed, but it’s a couple of short plane rides from Abu Dhabi. That “most alien-looking place on Earth” is a lure.

2. The Holy Land. Jerusalem, et al. Not far from here, but not necessarily easy to get to. I would want to have several days. Do it right.

1. Krak des Chevaliers, a magnificent Crusader castle. Unfortunately, it is in Syria, which has been difficult for Americans to enter for years, and now with Syria in upheaval, we won’t be visiting anytime soon. But the notion persists …
