It started down the right-field line, where most of the Chinese Taipei fans seem to be congregated.
It was in MandarinĂ‚Â … and thus unintelligible to me.
But it quite certainly was sung to the tune of “Old McDonald Had a Farm.”
More fans seemed into that than the seventh-inning stretch tune fest.
That would be “Take Me Out to the Ballpark,” which wasn’t translated on the scoreboard. So only the Chinese who know the English alphabet … hardly anyone that is … could sing along.
As it turned out, fans actually started a chant before the song was over.
“Buy me some peanuts and Crackerjack” …?
Has to be a mystery to the locals.
I will say this: There’s a nice crowd here. And I bet it’s about a lot of cheap tickets available. And the people who are here will be able to say, “Yeah, I saw an Olympic event.” Some really weird American sport.
It would be like those of you who saw team handball at the 1984 Olympics. No idea what you’re looking at, but you probably saved that ticket stub.
