You oversleep by 20 minutes and still wake up jittery, from lack of sleep.
I don’t think I’ve had five hours any of the last three nights. I’m too tired to sit and think about it.
OK, I’ll try …
Tuesday night was semi-late because of the night USA ball game, and then I had to be at women’s taekwondo at 9 a.m. the next morning. Couldn’t have been more than five hours.
Wednesday night wasn’t ultra-awful. Just the end of taekwondo, some blogging, and I was in the room by 1 a.m. But up at 6:30 for BMX on Thursday, the Monsoon Day. Except that race was rained out, after the slog out here … then came the beach volleyball, and the day ended late with all the hanging around waiting for Allyson Felix to come to the medalists press conference.
Got back to the room at 1:45, after missing the 1 a.m. bus by one minute …
Up at 7, again, for BMX (postponed from yesterday; great, I get to make the 50-mijnute ride to the bike pod for the fifth time in eight days) … already had no shot at the 7:20 bus, barely made the 7:40, but only by skipping breakfast entirely for the first time since I’ve been here.
I’m not sick. I got over that ugly little cold in about three days, for which I am thankful.
I’m just not sleeping enough. I’m a late starter, and I haven’t had a late start since Tuesday.
I am doing synchronized swimming later today, inshallah (as my brother likes to say) … and if I can summon the enthusiam and energy to write that with some alacrity … I have a shot at a real night’s sleep.
That could help. A lot.
This kind of stuff is easier to pull off when you’re younger. Say, 30. Which is about as young as anyone can be and still get the Olympics as a credentialed journalist. I was 28 at my first Olympics, way back when.
Yes, I’m happy to be here, quite. But the reality is, it takes a toll on you when you do as much as you can, and most people here do.
I’m guessing I will be semi-comatose on the plane rides back, come Tuesday.

It could be worse, I suppose. You could try to cover the Games like you did in 2000 AND track down some high school football coaches and pound out a prep football follow column.
Get some rest.

Paul, once you get your body clock back to California time, there’s a place you should check out (if you haven’t already). It’s Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. It’s a thin strip of grass on a cliff overlooking the beach. It’s a fantastic place to close your eyes, breathe in the sea air and listen to the seagulls. I’ve gone there quite a few times to decompress. There’s also a hotel there. It might be a good idea to check in for a week and just unwind totally — especially with what you’ve been through the past five months.
