Well … I feel like it’s time I piped up here. And if y’all think he changed the course of your career/life …

Anyway.

We all want to pay tribute, we all want to commiserate, but mostly, I
think we’d all like to see each other after all these years.

I am proposing a Sun Sports reunion of sorts.

Just floating ideas here, but thinking of two days in Vegas — Paul’s least favorite place in the
world, but an excellent gathering site for journalists and
ex-journalists used to a 24-hour atmosphere.

Figure July is when most of us are least busy, and hotel rooms are
cheap. All airlines fly into Vegas, for our far-flung correspondents.
The rest of us can drive it.

I’m happy to handle details and logistics etc (the travel agent in me
comes out!)

Let’s start with a show of hands. Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

I’ll be living that much closer to Vegas in about three weeks. Keep us posted … maybe I can sneak out for a day or two.

  • 2 cindy robinson // Apr 3, 2008 at 3:45 PM

hey i’m there. I think it’s a great idea. Schulte, I’m counting on you to be there — you told me you would fly out for a re-union…

  • 3 Jim Schulte // Apr 3, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Damn skippy! I’d even go to Las Vegas, New Mexico.

I do have one little niggling comment: Vegas … July … Hell … Hotter than.

    Hi Leah.

    So who’s gonna be outside?

  • 5 Gil Hulse // Apr 3, 2008 at 6:10 PM

I’m interested. I have some work and family commitments that month. Probably later in the month would work better for me rather than earlier. But, anyway, when you come up with a date let me know and I’ll see if it is doable for me.
Speaking about Vegas, does that mean Schulte is still going to split all his winnings with me. ‘Cause I never win.
And who was on that trip when the car died on top of Cajon pass on the way back from an overnighter in Vegas and Vic’s wife had to come get us?

  • 6 cindy robinson // Apr 4, 2008 at 6:28 AM

Hey Gil How are you? How’s Spokane news biz? I never heard about that trip — who’s car? The only dates that are bad for me in July is 26-30.

    Leah:

Wonderful idea, and I’d love to go (is the wine bar at Mandalay Bay still open?) to hear all the war stories retold by the people who actually lived through them. Would this be the first vegas trip, like, ever, that PaulO doesn’t make the drive up and back?
two july weekends work for me: July 4-6 and July 18-20 (nascar’s last off weekend of season; brickyard is the following 25-27 weekend, and I can’t get out of that).

Well, I remember two cars dying on return trips from Vegas … both mine. The first was the ’72 Dodge Dart Swinger, bright yellow with the white Landau top. Tres classy! It puked its motor out within spitting distance of the Cajon summit. Somebody rescued us … yeah, i think it was the (understandably) very put-out Lynn W. I recall my dad gave me a ride up a couple days later. He pushed me over the crest and then I coasted downhill at freeway speeds until taking the 2nd St. offramp. I choose that one because the car was finally losing speed, and the other offramps past that one were all uphill, so I wouldn’t have made it. What’s that … over 20 miles? Good thing it wasn’t power steering. But I had to stand on the brakes because they were vacuum boosted. Not the craziest thing I ever did, but close.

Then there was the evil late-60s Fiat 124 Sports Coupe, which I bought from Mike Davis. It actually kept dying on the way up to Vegas. Some electrical problem (there’s a stunner … it was a Fiat, after all) Oh, and it was also overheating. Bad. I’m pretty sure I did some long-distance downhill coasting on the way home, but you all were asleep. That trip killed it. But I have no memory of what I did with it.

One other car story: I still own the 56 Triumph that I bought in Berdoo in 1969, and the Jag XKE, which I think replaced the Fiat.

Most any weekend in July would work for me, but let’s try to avoid the whole Fireworks weekend. And any winnings by me will be split between Gil and the bar tab, which I suspect could threaten most of us with bankruptcy.

I think late July seems likely, 18-20, … but there are still a handful of peanuts in the gallery we haven’t heard from. Maybe they need to read this blog!!

Do you all prefer a weekend to, say, a sunday-monday or monday=tuesday kind of thing? I don’t know how many have real jobs now and decent days off. (and prefer an $80 room sted of $180). Think of all the extra gambling money!! (or shopping, depends)

Yeah it’s hot … but those still in the biz are slowest in July.

And winnings would just be the cherry on top, no?

I was thinking, Schulte, you’re gonna think I’m sooo old…

I’m in. Weekend or weekdays would be fine, too. Maybe I’ll go up a few stories and see if Dean Singleton is available and I’ll bring him out from Denver.

  • 11 Gregg Patton // Apr 5, 2008 at 12:51 PM

I’m in only if Schulte drives.
As for dates, I’m better in early-to-mid July. I’m gone on vacation July 20-27 to Seattle, and if I’m in Vegas the 19th I’ll have to manufacture some kind of bogus column. For the first time in my life. Ever.
Although it might be arranged if that’s the only weekend that works.

  • 12 nickj // Apr 7, 2008 at 7:55 AM

I think that’s a great idea. I’ll pick up Jimbo on the way.

  • 13 Gil Hulse // Apr 8, 2008 at 10:47 AM

    Leah,
Sunday-Monday probably best for me as I’m still doing the ol’ night desk routine, but I could do some rearranging of days off. Can probably only make it latter half of July, like July 19 and on. C’mon Gregg, you can fake one column. And Seattle? Why would you choose 70s in Seattle when you can be baking in Vegas.
Hi Cindy! Yep. Still in Spokane. I’ve actually been at paper here longer than I was at The Sun. Hard to believe.

  • 14 Paul Oberjuerge // Apr 8, 2008 at 11:02 AM

    i’m leaning toward july 20-21, a sunday-monday.
dunno if anyone wants to talk to dilbeck, david leon … the idea of curran attending amuses me, but i don’t think we’ve heard from him.

  • 15 cindy robinson // Apr 8, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Hey Gil — that is hard to believe. You were an institution at The Sun. Now I guess you’re an institution at both places. 🙂

It’ll be fun to see everyone at the reunion. July 20-21 works well for me. NickJ, I’ve missed you and your poems.

  • 16 James Curran // Apr 9, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Then prepare to be amused, Rufus.

  • 17 Doug Padilla // Apr 9, 2008 at 6:48 PM

You mean a real road trip? In a hotel and everything? I haven’t done that in as long as I can remember. I’m in. Definitely. Now if I can pry away Smith from his many kids and reattach him to my hip it will really be like old times.

  • 18 Doug Padilla // Apr 9, 2008 at 6:49 PM

And a chance to hang with my buddy Curran again? Priceless.

  • 19 Nick Leyva // Apr 9, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Maybe I can get Tom Hoak and Dick Bruich to make guest appearances!

  • 20 cindy robinson // Apr 13, 2008 at 6:51 AM

Hey, haven’t heard Dilbeck chime in — are you going to be there? If so, bring your company credit card — drinks on LANG — that is if they don’t deny the card…LOL
