Tommy Lasorda, gotta love him. Well, actually, you don’t. Even Dodgers fans I think find him a little over the top.
I can tell you for certain that any journalist who covered the Dodgers during Lasorda’s two decades as manager … well, the “bleeding Dodger blue” and “the Big Dodger in the Sky” lost its charm in about a day. To listen to it for years was a form of torture, pure and simple.
He also was known for his sudden and remarkably profane outbursts. “What did I think of Kingman’s performance?” will go down in baseball history for gratuitous use of F-bombs while speaking to people with tape recorders.
Anyway, here is a link to some video of an interview done, via remote, with Tommy. As has been noted, he appears to be in a coma for the first few minutes … as well as generally annoyed that the ear phone isn’t working quite right. Tommy has some interesting, or provocative things to say. Still.
But you have to be careful how and when and where you use him. As that almost painfully awful video demonstrates.
Via remote, in the morning, with Tommy propped up where he’s squinting into the sun, is not a way you want to interview the grumpy old guy.

My one regret throughout my career was not having the opportunity to interview Tommy in the locker room after a game, a la natural … except for the blue Keds sneakers. I feel cheated.
