Seeing Double in U.S. Soccer

July 7th, 2009 · 2 Comments · soccer

A couple of us were waiting for players outside the Los Angeles Galaxy locker room … and a familiar face emerged from the coaches’ office.

I looked at him and thought, “Michael Kammarman, media relations officer for the U.S. national soccer team.” He looked right at me. And I said, “How was South Africa?”

It was a few days after the conclusion of the Confederations Cup, and Kammarman was over there with the U.S. team for its run to the championship match. Or so I thought.

And Kammarman said, “I wasn’t there.”

Which left me … supremely puzzled.

A couple of thoughts zipped through my head. “He turned out all those media releases without being with the team?” And, “and now he’s in Carson … why? Because the Gold Cup is going on?”

Meanwhile, Kammarman was looking at me. Nothing actually had been said.  Maybe three seconds had passed.

And he said to me, “Look at my credential,” and held up the picture ID hanging from his neck. Not that this made any sense to me.

I glanced at the rectangle of colored plastic and saw Kammarman’s mug shot along with the words “Kammarman” and “Galaxy” … and I was still at a loss. What was Michael Kammarman doing in Carson … and why hadn’t he been in South Africa? Couldn’t the federation afford it?

I was just massively confused. Something here wasn’t right but clearly I hadn’t figured it out.

And Kammarman said, “You’re looking for my brother. He’s my twin.”

Yes. Michael Kammarman has an identical twin. David Kammarman. And David happens to work for the Los Angeles Galaxy. His title is “director of soccer operations.” He works with coach/general manager Bruce Arena, which explains why David Kammarman was in the coaches’ office … and has been with the club since February.

I hadn’t heard it, though. And it was taking a long time, it seemed, for this to sink in. Identical twin. Same sport. I hadn’t heard about it. What are the odds?

My first thought was, “Michael Kammarman is messing with me.” It wasn’t something I would have expected from him, but maybe …

Finally I stammered something like, “So … you’re his identical twin?” And David Kammarman said, “well, actually he’s my identical twin. I’m older than he is.”

By, like, X number of minutes.

So, now, I’m feeling like an idiot, even though I probably shouldn’t have. Yes,  if I’d followed Galaxy hirings, if I’d studied the front office bios in the media guide … I would have known this.

So, finally, I decided this wasn’t a joke. I looked at his credential again, and in smaller type was the name “David” above “Kammarman.” So, yes, there are two of them. Well, one of each, but you know what I mean.

David Kammarman looks a lot like Michael Kammarman. And sounds like him.  David is a bit thinner. Maybe.

And I said, “Do you ever have fun with this? You could really mess with people.”

Like, say, me … without even trying.

David Kammarman said something like, “Sometimes. If I feel like it.”

And he walked away. Presumably to rejoin people who expected to see David Kammarman walk though a door, not Michael.

Anyway, yeah, it was the oddest thing that has happened to me in a while. Someone who I knew to be someone. Who in some ways was that someone. But wasn’t.

I was reading through your articles and I came across this one- old but still amusing.. Imagine my surprise when I thought David was Michael and vice versa– and I am their Mother….

Yep, I knew David & Michael back in elementary/middle school. They were good soccer players way back then, actually. I’ve known other identical twins but none that looked so VERY alike as those two. It was rumored (but never proven) that they would occasionally swap identities on days when tests were given. Not sure what incentive the smarter one would have been offered in exchange for taking his brother’s test. But that’s what passed for decent gossip back at that age.
