Usain Bolt and 19.11: What I Said Before

August 21st, 2009 · 2 Comments · Beijing Olympics, Olympics

So, let’s see … Usain Bolt has run the 100 and 200 in the Beijing Olympics last year, and the 100 and 200 in the world championship this month in Berlin …

And he has set world records in all four finals.

I wrote a few days ago that I remain an Usain Bolt unbeliever. I still am. In fact, if anything I am more convinced that he is cheating than I was a few days ago.

Today, he ripped another .11 off a record, this time in the 20-meter run. Clocking 19.19 and winning by .62 seconds — which is by a mile, in the 200. Who was the last person to win like that? Marion Jones? Florence Griffith Joyner?

Exactly!

Sure.  Usain Bolt is clean.  Sure. We have a century of great athletes out there, none of whom got within .13 of Bolt’s time in the 200, none of whom got within .13 of his 100 record  … and he’s massively better than any of them — ever. Even the guys who we already know were ‘roided up when they ran their best times. He’s that much better. Than anyone.

We have been through this before. Hello! Do Bolt boosters have any memory of any of this? When someone trashes world records in really basic sports, something isn’t right. You could look it up.

Some day. That’s my final word on this. Some day … we will find out. And the silly people trying to tell us that He Is Special will feel very silly, indeed.

I will agree, Bolt’s times are somewhat super human. However, There has never been a sprinter in history with his physical features. Tommy Smith and Carl Lewis are the closest at about 6′-2″ or 6′-3″; nobody has ever been 6′-5″. In this day and age of performance enhancing substances, Bolt would have to be blatantly flaunting his or his coaches abilities to stay one step ahead of testing. His outrageous times would lead anyone to question his performances. I’m sure he is the most tested track athlete out there. Tyson Gay set an American record of 9.71 when second to Bolt. If Bolt were not around people would be astonished at that time. I don’t blame you for being skeptical, but it is possible that a freak of nature is in our midst.

Most athletes who use performance enhancing drugs have bulky, muscular bodies; Bolt is still pretty thin. He has long muscular legs but his upper body isn’t that big. His countryman, Asafa Powell, looks more like a bodybuilder than he does. 6′-5″, 200lbs is not that hefty.
