For this, I might spend the $1,500 on airfare and invest the 25 hours in transit and fly back to Los Angeles.
The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, both 18-0 and playing in the Super Bowl?
I’m there. If it can possibly be done. Not at the game. Just in the country. For the party. To see the country stand still. For the seven-hour pre-game and the four-hour game.
This looked like a pipe dream a few weeks ago. Both teams had too far to go, and only one team ever had gotten to 18-0 before. So, c’mon, this couldn’t happen.
But now?
The Colts are 14-0 and only four victories away. The Saints, 13-0 and five. A pair of unbeatens meeting in the Super Bowl? It’s not exactly around the corner … but it’s now definitely down the street.
What I don’t pick up on, over here on the shores of the Gulf (Persian or Arabian, depending on which side you stand on), is that America is in a lather over this.
Aren’t you? Aren’t all football fans now rooting for the Colts and Saints to Make This Happen? You should be.
18-0 and 18-0? When only one team in the history of the league ever has been 18-0?
A guaranteed perfect NFL champion? Knocking the 17-0 Dolphins of 1972 from their perch? And the loser forever remembered as The Great Team That Ran into the Really Great Team?
This is huge. I’m getting excited just thinking about … and I’m 8,000 miles from American airspace!
This definitely could happen.
What we need …
1. The Saints to close out with victories at home over Dallas on Saturday, at home over Tampa Bay on Dec. 27 and at Carolina on Jan. 3.
2. The Colts to finish out the regular season with a victory at home over the Jets on Dec. 27 and at Buffalo on Jan. 3.
The ones I worry about here are the Saints at Carolina and the Colts at Buffalo. Because both represent the only time our unbeatens would have to play outside before the Super Bowl. And because both of the opponents are just crummy enough (5-8) that the Saints and Colts might let down a little … and because both teams are just good enough that, geeked out of their minds, playing for a landmark victory to savor over the offseason … and playing in weather that might be around freezing (Carolina) and arctic (Buffalo) … both pass-oriented unbeatens could crash and … well, not burn so much as be buried under the snow.
3. Then the Saints would get someone like Arizona or Philly in the conference semis, while the Colts play, maybe, the Patriots (uh-oh).
4. The Colts get the Chargers or Bengals in the AFC title game, while the Saints get, probably, Minnesota and Brett Favre in an impossibly huge NFC title game that, in any other year, would be a fantastic Super Bowl.
Remember: The Saints and Colts are dome teams, and they play outside only once each between now and the Super Bowl. That’s good. Dome teams are much better inside than out. And their fans give them a real advantage with the noise they make.
It’s also good that Drew Brees is playing out of his mind … and that Peyton Manning seems to have entered the Michael Jordan Zone, where he cannot be beaten in any close game, and everyone in football knows it.
What’s not so good … is that end-of-the-season road game in the cold … and at least one truly scary playoffs game (Belichick, Brady and the Pats; Favre and the Vikes).
But it could happen. Yes, it could.
It’s not something you would want to bet even money on, yet, but I’d say it’s about a 25 percent chance, now, that it will happen. And all of America should be rooting for it. You might even see me suddenly appear at LAX around Ground Hog Day.

Even better, if they meet as 18-0 teams, the Super Bowl is in Miami. Perfect. Don Shula and Mercury Morris can pass out the trophy … assuming both don’t t pass out at seeing such a game in their backyard.
