This photo gallery is put up by one of those sites who live for photo galleries, then bombard you with ads and links (and slow response times) as you drew to negotiate the photos.
So, fair warning.
But this one alleges to represent 19 photos that could have been taken only in Dubai.
After six years in the UAE, including more than a little time spent in Dubai, I think I can speak to the accuracy of the “only in Dubai” part of this.
And thanks to LoKoGyRL for sending along the link.
Let’s begin with the intro, which suggests Dubai is “the global capital of excess”.
It’s in the running, certainly, but New York, Las Vegas and Paris have to be in there, and probably London and even Los Angeles, too.
Something to keep in mind is this: Dubai has lots and lots of people — like those other cities — who are just barely getting along. For them, Dubai may be flashy, but not for them.
And the comparison to Vegas? One huge difference: Gambling is illegal in Dubai.
OK, the photos — and we have linked to them individually, to save you the hassle of going through the whole gallery.
1. Yep, this ATM … The gold-dispensing ATM. Abu Dhabi has one, too. Wouldn’t be a surprise if several other cities do, as well.
2. Oh, just your typical view from a hotel room. That photo was taken from the upper stories of the Burj Khalifa, still the tallest building in the world. Thing is, the hotel inside the Burj is not nearly that high; the Armani hotel’s top floor is the 39th, which is nothing special.
3. This cheetah called shotgun. Yes, Dubai is known for guys who buy exotic animals, including cheetahs allowed to sit in the SUV. But I bet Abu Dhabi, which has more individual homes, has more big cats.
4. What, your bathroom doesn’t look like this? So, a big bathroom. Big deal.
5. The world’s fanciest Starbucks. I’m pretty sure that’s the Ibn Battuta Mall, in Dubai, and the whole place has facades like that.
6. Not your average traffic jam. Probably unique to Dubai … enough Ferraris driving, in a cluster, to cause traffic issues.
7. Probably not even the master suite at this hotel. I’m sure it isn’t, if it’s one of the major hotels … but they’re saying Vegas doesn’t have a 100 hotel rooms more impressive than that one? (None may be more gaudy, though.)
8. Absolutely no fish. Dubai is ultra-hot six months a year. You don’t want fish on the metro, which can take 90 minutes from one end to another.
9. He keeps steering the boat … OK, another big cat, and this one pretty clearly is just offshore of Dubai. No steering going on, though, unless there’s is a tiller behind the cat.
10. Seems like a foolproof plan. Everyone involved in that classified ad appears to be of Indian origin, and arranged marriages are not uncommon there, even now. Probably would see a lot more ads like that in a big-city Indian newspaper.
11. What, no GoPros? Two guys in kanduras paddling surf boards doesn’t happen everywhere, granted. But the Gulf usually is placid as a swimming pool. Nice photo of the Burj Al Arab in the background, anyway. (And I bet it has lots of hotel rooms nicer than the one, above.)
12. Be sure to park your camel … A fun photo, but Dubai license plates don’t look like that, unless the photo is even older than it looks. Camels wandering around among cars is far more likely to happen out in the desert of the UAE (or other Gulf countries), as opposed to the city of Dubai.
13. Nice to have this … Looks strange, yeah, but not if you know anything about camel racing. The guy driving the BMW is leading a camel who is about to race, or has finished (more likely, given the blanket). The oversized hump on the back looks like the electronic “jockey” that whips the camels while racing.
14. His Little Pony is sick. That’s weird, by anyone’s standards. Would work better if the rider were an Elvis impersonator.
15. Ah yes …Â It appears to be legit, as a news story. The author works for the Gulf News, a Dubai newspaper. First time, though, I’ve seen anyone recommend a “gentle whipping” in a public forum.
16. Culture Shock. This is one of the most “Dubai” photos in the group. That sort of thing happens all the time. Westerner with no sense of what is considered appropriate attire, and covered local women not happy about it. To go further, I think that might be at the Dubai World Cup, a day of horse racing famous for skimpy outfits and silly hats worn by expats.
17. The police drive Lambos. Actually, yes, they do. The Dubai police have all sorts of exotic cars in their fleet. Another very Dubai image.
18. Not your average tennis court. That is a legit photo. It is Roger Federer and Andre Agassi knocking the ball around at the Burj Al Arab, about 2005, on what appears to be the helicopter landing pad.
19. Dubai – where flip phones … This could be anywhere that caters to people with too much money. Also available, diamond-encrusted phones and watches.
Not a bad list. Some misleading stuff. Things that could be found elsewhere. With a little more diligence, a better list could be made.
