Ahead of Curt … and Barack Obama

Ah, yes, the NCAA tournament bracket.

I went with the “highest seed in every round” system … in the year that two No. 5 seeds and a No. 2 got to the Final Four. Nice timing.

So, no, I will not be finishing atop the Abu Dhabi Ballers (sponsored by Tandoori Corner) standings.

But I’m ahead of my colleague on the news desk … as well as the Leader of the Free World.

That would be Barack Obama, president of the United States, who did so well in his bracket a year ago … and so poorly in his bracket this season.

Barack had Kansas, Kentucky, Kansas State and Villanova in his Final Four.

Oops! None of them got there! And Kansas and Villanova went out in the second round. Snap!

Meanwhile,  I have one team in the Final Four,  the Dukies, who just finished off Baylor, 78-71. I have rocketed up to fifth in the ADB standings, with 62 points. But, alas, I will not be going any higher because I picked Duke to lose to Kentucky in the Final Four.

Three guys remain in contention in our 14-person tournament, including one guy who picked West Virginia to win it all. And if they do, so does he.

I may come back to this highest-seed thing someday. Didn’t we just have a run of years where the Final Four was nearly always 1-2 seeds? George Mason was a 10, I think, but other than that …

Duke vs. West Virginia in one semi, Michigan State vs.  Butler in the All-5-Seed semifinal. The fun part of that is a fairly low seed will play for the national title. Though it would be much more fun to have Butler there, instead of Tom Izzo and MSU, who seem to be playing in April all the time.

Anyway, I’m done. Just like my benchmate Curt … and the Prez.

Despite having only two of four Final Four teams, I’m in the 98.8 percentile (59,321st place, out of 4 million-plus) in my one and only ESPN bracket. I might be in contention in the Secore-run pool.

Butler-West Virginia would be just fine with me. Gene Hackman and Jerry West can jointly throw up the jump ball at the start.
