And Who Didn’t See This Coming?

January 7th, 2013 · No Comments · College football, The National, UAE

Alabama 42, Notre Dame 14, in the BCS title game. For college football.

I don’t know what the point spread was, but I would have taken Alabama if they were giving anything less than 17.

I’m pretty sure I read this somewhere, that this would be a bad game — oh, yes, on this blog, back in November.

The down side to this?

This is one of the few times in a year when we at The National will run anything about college football.

(We run it so rarely, our web guys did not get around to posting it; probably had no idea where to place it. Even Britons who follow the NFL a little have no grasp of the whole American college sports thing. Most definitely including college football and college basketball. And no appreciation of it. As a sports editor in the UAE, then, it is irresponsible to publish college football news with any regularity.)

And it turned out to be a beyond-boring game.

I am tired of the SEC. That’s seven straight BCS championships for the Old Confederacy.

I am weary of Alabama. Three BCS titles in four years for those guys, and the state of Alabama (Auburn) produced the fourth, too.

And I am sick of Nick Saban, the personality-challenged Alabama coach. Most coaches are control freaks, but this guy is off the charts. In an unhealthy way. I dearly wish an NFL team will hire him, so he can get slapped around again.

Part of this is USC’s fault. And Pitt and everyone else who couldn’t manage to defeat Notre Dame during the regular season and keep them out of this slaughter.

All we can do is hope for a more interesting game next time. And it would be more interesting if Alabama isn’t in it, the SEC isn’t in it, and Nick Saban isn’t in it — but at this point I would settle for any one of those three.
