It may be time to change the name of this blog.
To … Back in the Day.
Maybe it’s just 60 years of Christmas Memories banging around in my head that puts me in mind of days gone by.
But … I saw a lot of stuff. Not so much lately, in retirement, but while wearing a game credential.
You want an opinion on a sports-related topic that happened 25 or 35 or 40 years ago? … I’m your guy.
I realized this the other day, when I was writing about the NFL and cold games … and I reeled off three games I saw — during the late 1970s. Yes, 40 years ago.
Two of the games were in Cleveland, back when the Browns played in Municipal Stadium. I could describe it to you. Steel pillars that held up the roof — but created lots of seats with limited visibility. I remember the hotdog machine spinning inside the surprisingly small press box up in the rafters of the stadium. I could name a bunch of sports writers who covered that game, many of them no longer with us.
So is that my role, going forward? Casting back in my memory, rummaging around?
“Hey, Gramps, what was Chuck Knox like?”
“What was your favorite USC football game?” “What is Tommy Lasorda all about?” “Where was I when Kirk Gibson hit that one-handed game-winning home run off Dennis Eckersley?”
Too much water has gone under the bridge — more than a decade — since I was a daily writer in SoCal. The last time I wrote regularly was in 2015 while based in the United Arab Emirates. I retired in 2016 and the continuation of this blog seems to require a new approach.
So, let’s try this. See how far we get.
What was it like, Back in the Day?
