Time for a little reminder of the best play from the best Super Bowl.
Sure, you could search it, but since I have the link right here, you can look at it with one click.
I wrote about Super Bowl 42 (Giants 17, Patriots 14) for The National, declaring it the best of the big games, and putting it in a historical context for our readers — many of whom are only dimly aware of the NFL.
I am convinced that most football fans do not recall what a horrible game the Super Bowl once was. Old folks have forgotten; young people weren’t around. But this game stunk for two decades.
I believe the turning point was in 2000, when the Rams and Titans played the One-Yard Game. (Yes, the game Helen Hunt’s character told the Tom Hanks character about in the movie Cast Away. “It was so exciting!”) I’d say that at least eight of the 12 games, beginning with “Rams 23, Titans 16” were fun to watch.
That rate of watch-ability did not exist in the early years. Indeed, I can remember making the case, perhaps as late as 1990, that the 1980 Super Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers was the best game in the series.
(The Rams led after every quarter but the fourth; a 31-19 final after a late Pittsburgh TD. Sure, I was not a disinterested observer; that was my first Super Bowl, and I had covered the Rams home and road for four years. But it was a great game, and any Rams fan who doesn’t admit to getting a little verklempt when McCutcheon threw that halfback option TD pass to Ron Smith, well, he or she is lying.)
So, if what we have here — the Helmet Catch — is the best play from the best Super Bowl (as opposed to my personal favorite) … it’s worth a look.
I saw it from the media work tent just outside the stadium in Glendale, Ariz. I had come out of the stadium, giving up my end zone seat in the auxiliary press box, to be closer to the interview area. And whether you first saw it on TV or, I’m sure, in person … the catch seems more remarkable the more often you watch it.
