Thanks to a reader from Hawaii for spotting this one, in the Los Angeles Times, of all places.
A “mixologist” in Abu Dhabi is producing camel milk shakes, as well as latte. And he is at the new Ritz-Carlton, which is no more than 10 minutes from where we live.
I have a confession to make.
Despite being in a region where camel milk is not hard to find … I have never tasted it. Not in nearly four years of being based in Abu Dhabi.
Even with claims that camel milk is at least as good for humans to consume as cow’s milk, camel milk has not exactly caught on as a global thing. (Though the UAE, for example, seems keen on exporting it.)
People who have not grown up consuming camel milk seem not to be crazy about the taste. One describes it as “musky” and suggests that it has a “barnyard smell”.
In the story linked, above, the camel milk mixologist touts camel milk as good to consume just before the daily Ramadan fast begins. Because of its high protein content. (And Ramadan begins tomorrow.)
I have no idea how much camel milk costs … but I think giving it a try is a pretty much required for UAE residents.
Maybe we can have a camel milk shake “bar” … and make an event of it. Or not.
