Complaining about Things Out of Our Control

September 16th, 2011 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, UAE

No point in talking about the weather, is there. But we do anyway.

Especially at this time of year here in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Not only is it boiling hot, day after day …

The humidity is crushing us.

At this writing, it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit and “feels like 112” because humidity is at 45 percent.

The awful part of this, which you wouldn’t suspect until you live here, is that the humidity skyrockets after dark. The wind drops or disappears, and the heat doesn’t exactly dissipate, and the water content in the air becomes truly startling.

I was a puddle of sweat at the Al Jazira-Al Wasl game the other night. Part of it is that the stadium at Jazira has, basically, zero air flow. High walls enclose the field, and not a breath of air gets inside.

The closest I have come, so far, to feeling as if the heat here might kill me was at a game at Jazira in June, when I kept walking away from press row to get into the hotel (built into the grandstand) to find some air-conditioning and get 60 seconds of cooling.

This wasn’t far behind that. Just awful. Neill Lucas, the Australia captain who now plays for Jazira, described it as possibly the worst conditions he has ever played in. All the players were spent. Shot. Losing fluids at a startling pace. Guys were faking injuries just so someone would bring them a bottle of water.

I walked home after that match. It’s not even a mile, but I was soaked to the skin by the time I finished. My cargo pants were glued to my legs, sweat was running off my nose. And it was midnight. Check of the temp? It was “97, feels like 115.” At midnight.

No use talking about the weather, can’t do anything about it … but a place like this, six months of the year … it’s just astonishing. I feel compelled to explain it.
