It is not clear to me where this idea originated, but it’s ridiculous:
Kevin Durant ready to sign on with the Golden State Warriors as a free agent this summer.
I know this is a slow time on the U.S. sports calendar, and we might be willing to talk about really stupid ideas, given we have very little else to talk about … but Durant to the Warriors is particularly silly.
From Durant’s perspective … why should a former MVP who ought to be in his prime go to a team that, likely, will have just its second straight NBA championship?
Even if the Warriors won two more — with Durant — he would not be given credit as the driving force. They were great before he arrived.
Durant would go to Golden State as Stephen Curry’s wingman. The Warriors would still be Curry’s team — as they should be.
Durant would be seen as One of Those Guys who chases a ring and seems to be conceding he cannot win one as the No. 1 guy on his current team. I prefer to believe Durant is not One of Those Guys, that he believes he can make a team a champion while he is the No. 1 option.
From the Golden State perspective, they are 51-5. It certainly seems as if they do not need to add another maximum-contract guy to succeed.
In fact, they seem to be the most carefully calibrated NBA team since Jordan’s Bulls, and perhaps since the Larry Bird Celtics.
Do the Warriors mess with that? Do they bring in an expensive free agent and lose some of their proven supporting cast? Do they take on the challenge of fitting in another superstar? Do they take shots from Curry and Klay Thompson?
If Kevin Durant wants to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder — and it is not clear he is even considering it, despite all the blather — I prefer to think he has enough confidence in his game that he would not settle for being the second option with a championship team.
If winning a title immediately is his No. 1 priority, he ought to go to a team with a solid core that is in need of an alpha dog to push on to the finals. The Boston Celtics, maybe. Toronto, his favorite team when he was a kid. The Los Angeles Clippers, especially if they are about to quit on Blake Griffin.
If Durant wants to think about a long-term project, he could consider the two teams that still matter enormously in the NBA — the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Durant would be huge on either of those major-market teams. The franchise would be built around him — from each trip down the court to the marketing side.
Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors is stupid. It’s lame. It is most likely to damage both parties — the marvel of teamwork that is the Warriors and the reputation of Durant, suddenly reduced to second option.
We should stop talking about this until it is more than hot air being blown by bored media organizations.
