Entering the World of Twitter

March 23rd, 2011 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, Pro League, soccer, Sports Journalism, The National, UAE

I’ve resisted it. This blog seemed enough, certainly when we consider how much time is involved.

But everyone is doing the Twitter thing, tweeting their hearts out, and as this has mushroomed it has struck me, more than once, that I bump into a lot of little stuff, while working in a newsroom, that might interest someone. Things that don’t get into the newspaper and not even onto this blog. So, Twitter. Why not?

You can follow me at … @PaulOberjuerge

Yes, a problem to spell, but you sign up for my feed one time and you never have to deal with the name again.

What will I tweet about?

Mostly about events I am covering or am watching here in the United Arab Emirates. We come across quite a few little nuggets that don’t get into the paper, and I can just Tweet them so that they don’t die inside my head.

This is particularly true in the Pro League, the UAE’s domestic soccer league. It is by far the most important sports organization in the country. Twelve teams, playing three domestic competitions, with teams in the Asian Champions League each year.

The top clubs spend buckets of money, too. Mounds. The coach at Al Jazira, a Brazilian named Abel Braga, apparently is paid 1.1 million dirhams a month — that’s about $280,000. Real money. Even if he’s paid only during the nine months of the season, that works out to $2.52 million. If he makes that per month over 12 months … that’s $3.36 million. And remember, top players always make more money than do coaches.

I also may tweet about other sports events both here and around the world. And occasionally may add an item about living here in the UAE, Abu Dhabi in specific, and the upheaval here in the Middle East/North Africa region.

Let’s see how this goes. I want to rival Charlie Sheen for followers. He’s got, what, 2 million? We can do this!
