The U.S. is managed by Davey Johnson. Yes, he of the two shaky seasons running the Dodgers.
His coaches are Reggie Smith, former Dodgers outfielder and coach; Rick Eckstein, brother of David; and Marcel Lachemann, former Angels manager in the mid-90s.
Among the players on the U.S. team are occasional major-leaguers Terry Tiffee, Matt Brown (of the Angels) and Mike Koplove. Also playing for the U.S.: Matt LaPorta, the main piece the Indians got from the Brewers in the CC Sabathia trade.
On the Taiwan side is a familiar face, too. Chin-Feng Chen, former Dodgers farmhand who had a cup of coffee in Chavez Ravine. He is batting cleanup for Chinese Taipei, actually.
Chen had a huge year for the San Bernardino Stampede (I think they still were) in 1999 or so, hitting for average and power.
He got a few at-bats at the end of four different Dodgers seasons (2002-05) and went 2-for-23 in his career. He’s back playing in Taiwan now.
He’s the DH for Taiwan (he was a wretched outfielder), but he can still hit. He just sent one to the wall in right-center for a double, but was thrown out trying to score, two batters later.
