Farewell to Lienz, and Austria

What a great discovery. Austria. Who knew?

That is a final picture of the Grandhotel Lienz, taken from the other side of the Isel River. Quite a spot. The hotel, the river, the city.

But I liked just about all of what I saw in this country.

Imagine Disney’s take on the Alps: It would look like this part of Austria. But it would not be real, like this is.

A clean, environmentally friendly country, with friendly people (many of whom speak English), great scenery and a healthy lifestyle — even with all that pork and beer.

Lienz is a fun little town, with its own cinema and lots of cafes. Living here might get tiring, just because they depend on tourists, and foreigners traipsing through your town can get old.

But some of the other, quieter towns … I could see living here. If the winters are not too harsh.

This afternoon, I will take off on the drive back to Munich, via Salzburg, and that could take four hours … and then catch a 10 p.m. flight to Manchester, for the next stage of the UAE Soccer World Tour 2012.
