Fifa Scandal and Hoping for Change at the Top

May 28th, 2015 · No Comments · Fifa, Football, soccer, UAE

When this day began it seemed inevitable Sepp Blatter would be reelected to a fifth term as Fifa president tomorrow — despite the arrests of several top Fifa officials yesterday and the amping up of the usual level of scandal surrounding global soccer.

And, as I wrote for The National, that certainty began to fray, as the day went on.

Much of the reconsidering revolved around the European confederation, usually known as Uefa and prounced you-EE-fuh.

Michel Platini, the Uefa president, said he told Blatter to his face that he should step down as president.

Platini also said he expected nearly all European national associations — 54 of them –  to vote for Prince Ali of Jordan, Blatter’s only opponent in the presidential election.

Various countries began to announce they would vote for Prince Ali. Australia, for instance. Canada.

There were the usual Twitter rumors. An ally of Prince Ali said he was counting on 60 votes other than those he would get from Uefa. Sheikh Ahmad, the new Fifa executive committee member from Kuwait, apparently was meeting with Asian associations and considering a flip to Prince Ali.

Also, during the day, betting odds in England changed fairly significantly. In the morning, Prince Ali was getting 1-to-18 odds. By early evening, that was down to 3-to-10.

But, at the end of the day, it seemed unlikely, as I wrote.

A successful movement to bring down Blatter would require some breaking down of his two biggest blocs of support — the 47 members of the Asian Football Confederation, and the 56 members of the Confederation of African Football.

Asia and Africa have supported Sepp Blatter all along; they believe he has done more for them than any other Fifa president. The AFC and CAF both reaffirmed their support of Blatter today, and that is upwards of 100 votes — of the 105 needed to win election.

Unless something strange happens tonight, Blatter is not going to be looking for a new job tomorrow.
