We made a fuss over the statue of David Beckham unveiled a couple of days ago at the former StubHub Park stadium. The first at a Major League Soccer stadium.
It should have been Landon Donovan; he put in more years, scored far more goals won more championships. For Beckham, the Los Angeles gig always seemed like part of the marketing arm of David Beckham Enterprises, Inc. Landon was all Galaxy all the time.
But there you go.
Here is the video of the event, courtesy of the LA Galaxy and videographer Paul-Michael Ochoa.
The statue shows Beckham about to do what he did best — strike a soccer ball at rest and send it/bend it pretty much wherever he wanted it to go.
And Beckham made some remarks about the honor, noted in the video, above.
One semi-strange aspect of the Beckham experience is how his voice does not fit the rest of him.
Always smart/dashing in dress, that winning smile, a visage of eternal youth (at age 43), the tattoos … and then he opens his mouth and his voice is pitched above the normal, with something far less than a posh accent.
If you played the video, and got to the part where he speaks, you know what I mean.
Yes, it should have been Landon, first in line for the team’s new Legends Plaza, but Beckham has the global cachet.
Also, it seems as if the club’s Ring of Honor — to recognize Galaxy officials as well as players — has a five-year waiting rule, and Landon keeps making comebacks (currently with the San Diego indoor soccer Sockers) and has to reset the clock.
The other players in the “Ring” — original Galaxy midfielders Cobi Jones and Mauricio Cienfuegos — figure to be candidates for future statues the club envisions, perhaps ahead of Landon, especially if the club wants to populate the Legends Plaza with a few more statues any time soon.
