The first adult photo of the Islamic State executioner known in popular media as Jihadi John was revealed today …
And Mohammed Emwazi, Kuwaiti national, former London resident, is seen … wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates cap.
Much to the consternation of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
If Jihadi John is ever captured/arrested maybe someone can ask him about that Pirates cap.
Where in London did he get one?
And why the Pirates? Or was it the “P” that he was after?
My first thought was, “this isn’t about the Pirates at all; it’s just bad luck”. And that is pretty much the case.
But …
We need to keep this in mind: antisocial (or worse) characters have been wearing dark-colored baseball caps for a couple of decades now. Going back to the Los Angeles Raiders caps preferred by gang members across the U.S. 25 years ago.
If the Pirates were still wearing just about any of their historical caps, and lots of them can be seen here, it seems unlikely that Jihadi John would have had a photo taken while wearing a Pirates cap.
The color of his cap is dark brown and the whole of it has no adornment — except for the letter P.
The Islamic State, remember, prefers black. Jihadi John is wearing black in his infamous videos, and the Islamic State flag is black.
The author Paul Theroux has written about returning to Africa, in 2013, and finding menacing young men wearing dark-colored baseball caps. And the young toughs have no idea what team their caps might represent. All they know is that gangsters wear ball caps, and dark ones, at that. That’s a global thing, it seems.
I think we might have to wait a very long time to find an Islamic State executioner wearing a blue or red ball cap.
And if the Pirates went back to stripes, or the color gold, or stars … I’m just going to guess their caps would be less appealing to sociopaths.
