Just Saw the London 2012 Bit at Closing

August 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Beijing Olympics

I liked it. A lot. And it makes me want to see the 2012 London Games … when until about 10 minutes ago I thought I would be bored by the idea.

These “preview” things, at Closing, can be tricky, and not always work out well. They are dwarfed by the scale by the current host. And you’re doing a promo for something four years out.

But this went well. A double-decker bus came in, and turned into a stage, and David Beckham (yes, of the Galaxy) was inside … and they did a Led Zeppelin song, and invoked lots of English/London images … and I really would like to go.

I think that will, in fact, be a fun Games. An honest and open one, without the overmanaged, overproduced Games the Beijing organizers just put on.

London is building a big sports part in the East End, some of its worst neighborhoods, and that has to be good.

I’m looking forward to it. I hope I’m there, on the ground, somehow.
