I know. I know. The Playoff Puppets advertising campaign has problems now, because the inspiration for one of the puppets — LeBron James — won’t be playing in the NBA Finals. Contrary to the putative “these guys will meet in the finals” script. Be interesting to see if Nike pulls the commercials. Probably so. Yes.
But I like a Los Angeles Lakers-Orlando Magic match-up. I think it could be quite fun. Two teams pretty much dedicated to outscoring people. Getting down the court and getting into the offense and knocking down some shots.
Neither team is going to plan on holding the other guys under 90 points. They will think more in terms of winning with 110. This isn’t going to be a grinding, grabbing, defense-first slugfest. At least, I really don’t think it will be.
The Magic is a fun team. The big guy (Dwight Howard) in the middle, and then a batch of three-point bombers. If they make their threes, the Magic wins the series.
The Lakers, too, are more about scoring than defending. Game 6 of the Denver series notwithstanding.
I like this. A lot. I think it will be fun.
And I give the Lakers a slight edge because they have Kobe Bryant. The Magic has some very good players, but Orlando doesn’t have that one go-to guy.
Of course, Cleveland had LeBron, and look where they are now. Goin’ fishin’ with Chuck Barkley. And remember, Orlando just eliminated LeBron, after dispatching the Celtics by winning a Game 7 in Boston.
And the Magic beat the Lakers in both of their regular-season matchups.
Still, I like the Lakers. In six games.

As for the ads, the BEST sports ad so far this year has been the series of “Amazing” ads from the NBA. It is a simple but very effective piece of classical piano juxaposed with various videos of past and present basketball clips. Apparently the music is not old but composed & performed by a lady (can’t remember her name) that also is in a rock band.
