I don’t usually go into these places, but since we tend to follow Landon Donovan, and this story about a possible reconciliation with wife Bianca Kajlich is all over the web, well …

Landon started this on Wednesday night with some post-match references to Bianca, who filed for divorce last summer. And then he spoke to someone from USA Today about it (the link, above).

And let’s stipulate that anyone who is interested in American soccer probably wishes this weren’t an ongoing sidebar to the World Cup round-of-16 match Saturday against Ghana. Really. We’ve hardly heard a word from England’s WAGs, and that is as it should be.

But this is all the context I can provide:

I met Bianca when interviewing Landon at his home (at the time) in Manhattan Beach in about 2005. They seemed like a happy couple. A cat and a couple of dogs. Or vice versa. Each with a career. This was pre-“Rules of Engagement” for Bianca. My recollection is she was about to go to a studio for a guest-star role on a TV drama.

Bianca seemed utterly normal/regular, at least that one day I was in the room with her. She is an attractive woman, but she doesn’t walk around the house as if she actually believes she is.

That was the day Landon and Bianca showed me their matching tattoos of hummingbirds. Each had the tattoo on his/her wrist. “Because hummingbirds mate for life,” was Bianca’s explanation. (Another reporter told me that Bianca had her tattoo removed over the last year; don’t know if it’s true.)

I had spoken with her before, at some length, for a story I had done back in 2004 about a key episode in the lives of Landon and Binky (as he calls her): The Kajlich family’s response, with Landon’s help, to Bianca’s brother being involved in a horrible accident in Prague in December of 2003.

Re-reading that story, it does seem that Landon is meant to be with Bianca and her family. But things happen, I know.

Here is a story I did after the 2006 World Cup, which changed Landon’s life, and in it is mentioned that he and Bianca were scheduled to be married on New Year’s Eve.

I don’t know how this will turn out. Meantime, here’s hoping that Landon is inspired by the whole thing … or that he can put it aside for about two hours on Saturday night.
