As we have noted here in years past, Christmas is surprisingly popular in this part of the Arabian Peninsula.
Of course, it is not a religious holiday but, then, it isn’t a very religious holiday in the West, either.
And this week, a massive, artificial, 42-foot Christmas tree has gone up in the enormous lobby at Emirates Palace, the ultra-posh hotel here in Abu Dhabi.
And here is a video of time-lapse photography showing how the tree went up and was decorated, then the lights turned on.
Christmas fits easily into this culture.
Like many countries in warm climates, the notion of winter is a popular one. I remember the “winter” clothes that came out in Hong Kong in December and January even though it was barely cold enough to wear a coat.
Same thing here in Abu Dhabi.
The notion of extra business is keenly felt at malls, which set up displays of what perhaps are supposed to be reindeer. Or perhaps just deer. With colored lights. Lots of lights.
The religion behind Christmas is no threat to be broadcast or accepted, outside those who brought their Christianity with them. It is safe to say the average Muslim here does not know what the holiday originally stood for.
What appears to make Christmas interesting is its “wintry” feel, and the lights and baking and treats — and definitely the idea of gift-giving.
Who doesn’t like an excuse to give or receive gifts? Which merchant has ever missed a chance to make more sales?
The 42-foot Emirates Palace will be up until January 7.
