My Favorite UAE Traffic-Ticket Story

December 20th, 2011 · No Comments · The National, UAE

This is epic. And to think I’m still trying to crack double figures in “traffic tickets, lifetime.”

The cops in Umm Al Qaiwain, one of the dinky emirates in the north of the UAE, pulled over a 23-year-old guy found to be the country’s leading traffic offender — with 331 outstanding ticket. He also owed 103,000 dirhams (a bit more than $28,000) in fines.

How did they catch him?

According to the story in The National, the guy drove the wrong way on a highway — while cops were watching.

The police impounded his car, then released him

Most of his tickets were for speeding.

Breaking the law while driving is a national sport here, as it is in most of the U.S. Speeding is a particular problem, and often a fatal one. The UAE’s rate of traffic fatalities is one of the highest in the world.

Last year, The National writes, UAE police impounded the car of another Emirati, also in his early 20s, who had committed 159 traffic offenses and accumulated a total of 88,350 dirhams ($24,000) in fines.

The No. 1 scofflaw is not in jail, but the cops said he will not get his car back until he has paid all his fines — and not everyone here carries around $28,000 in cash.
