Next Disney Land: The UAE!

August 24th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Abu Dhabi

This is my one and only entrepreneurial idea of the year.

Disney ought to construct a theme park here in the United Arab Emirates. No. Really.

The government and most of the people here are seriously family friendly. Think Utah, except a lot warmer.

Disney is squeaky clean, socially conservative … and likes touristy markets where lots of people have lots of disposable income.

Did someone say “Dubai”?

Disney could build one of its parks on the edge of Dubai, a city that loves big and over-the-top and brand names. Especially expensive brand names.

I think UAE Disneyland would be a huge success. The Emiratis wouldn’t blink at whatever it is Disney charges these days to get in … it is a country with essentially no gang problems, few if any roving teens and no need to worry about serving alcohol. We have lots of parents and kids who like to hang out together and don’t mind spending money … and it also is a car culture with aspects of thrill seeking — which sounds a lot like SoCal, doesn’t it?

This is a far better place for a Disneyland than is, say, France, which resists American culture — while the UAE is generally OK with it. Especially the “Up With People”  cheerful and smiling part of it.

Might have to tweak a few rides. The Matterhorn could become Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride, etc. The Autopia would need to have little SUVs instead of sports cars. Main Street USA might be more like an idealized version of an old-fashioned souk. “Casbah UAE” perhaps.

And they would need lots of shade — and maybe even want to take it inside entirely, as is the plan with Ferrari World, which is going up near the race track here in Abu Dhabi.

This would work. Saudis would travel here to go to Disneyland. All the Gulf Arabs would. Tourists would drop by. Local expats would go.

Disneyland and the UAE. Made for each other. Someone should have noticed. If they haven’t, I have.
