Interesting reader “poll” on the espn.com home page.
Which only reinforces how many of us are most impressed by what we have seen most recently.
It asks readers to vote on “which is the best team right now in the NBA conference finals?”
A week ago, I’d guess that this vote would have come in for Cleveland in a landslide, with the Lakers a clear second and the Nuggets a distant fourth.
Now?
1. Denver Nuggets, 36 percent.
2. Orlando Magic, 33 percent.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers, 16 percent.
4. Los Angeles Lakers, 15 percent.
Remember, the Lakers are tied 2-2 in their series with the Nuggets and retain home-court advantage over a Denver franchise that has never played for an NBA title, let alone won one. But the Nuggets did win last night.
Remember, the Cavaliers are down only 2-1 in their series with the Magic and could regain home-court advantage in the next few hours. But Orlando won the most recent game of the series, Sunday night.
This is with more than 128,000 votes tabulated.
Denver or Orlando received the most votes in 49 of the 50 states.
The Lakers didn’t come in first even in California. It went Magic (34 percent), Lakers (31), Nuggets (27), Cavs (9), with 12,700 votes cast. (Ohio, at least, still believes in the Cavs. Well, kind of. Cleveland’s team gets a plurality of votes, anyway, with 38 percent, making Ohio the only state not to go for the teams that won the last game.)
So, yeah … sports journalists often are criticized for being bandwagon analysts, unable to retain a view of the bigger picture when confronted with more-recent evidence. But fans are right there with us — if not far out in front. Running.
Here is a link to the state-by-state vote. I don’t know how long this will be posted.
