Obama and His NCAA Bracket

March 18th, 2011 · No Comments · Abu Dhabi, Basketball, UAE

Wow. What do we call him? The “president ‘n’ chief prognosticator?”

No matter your political orientation, we have to concede that Barack Obama apparently knows something about college basketball.

The president went 15-1 today to run his two-day record in the NCAA basketball playoffs to 29-3.

Yes. 29-3.

Where does that put his bracket among the 5.9 million brackets submitted to espn.com?

Tied for 492nd. Among 5.9 million, remember.

If gambling were legal, I would be inclined to get my hands on Obama’s bracket and take a flier with it for the next round or two. Sure, some luck is involved, but 29-3?

The upsets he correctly tabbed: 10th-seeded Florida State over seventh-seeded Texas A&M, No. 11 Marquette over No. 6 Xavier and No. 12 Richmond over No. 5 Vanderbilt.

What has he missed? He didn’t see No. 13 Morehead State taking down No. 4 Louisville (who did?), nor did he anticipate No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth trashing (or beating) Georgetown. He can be faulted for the latter, because the Hoyas have a poor recent history in the NCAAs and also ended the season badly. Maybe the prez been inside the Beltway too long already.

And he also can be faulted for his one failed upset prediction, No. 11 Michigan State over No. 6 UCLA. The Spartans were shaky all year, and the Bruins may not be great, but they’re decent. (Still, he might have gotten this one too, if UCLA had missed 19 free throws instead of 17.)

Maybe I’m a little cynical, but I wonder if politics ever entered his thinking. With a politician, don’t they have to?

Is he more inclined, for instance, to tab teams from potential 2012 election swing states to ingratiate himself with a few more voters? Those teams who have a reasonable shot, that is? That might explain his dissing of UCLA, because he certainly will carry California. But Michigan could be a battleground state. So could Kentucky (Louisville). He also didn’t pick St. Johns, which comes from electorally dependable New York. But he didn’t pick Richmond from potentially on-the-fence Virginia. So.

Anyway, all but one of his picks for the Sweet Sixteen are still alive (Louisville being the miss), and according to espn.com, just six of the 5,923,829 brackets submitted have all 16 of their Sweet Sixteen teams still playing.

I’m not advocating gambling of any sort, but here is Obama’s bracket, as told to espn.com.

If you didn’t follow the link, he has all four No. 1 seeds in the Final Four (no great imagination there, but it’s the prudent way to go), and Kansas, the birthplace of his mother, to win the whole thing.
