Shaq and Kobe: Revisionism Runs Amok

February 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Basketball, Kobe, Lakers

I may need to get my blood sugar tested after reading one sickly sweet “Shaq and Kobe kiss and make up” story after another out of the NBA All-Star weekend.

It’s nice that they’re no longer glowering at each other.

But several of the assumptions made by reporters , over the past few days — and even Cavaliers coach Mike Brown — are not quite accurate.

The idea advanced by Shaquille O’Neal over the weekend, and seemingly embraced by some journalists, that the entire feud was a “marketing” ploy … is silly. Shaq knows how to sell tickets, but his anger at Bryant was real.

Mike Brown’s contention that there is no telling how many rings the two of them might be wearing “on their fingers and toes” is erroneous. We know the answer to that: 3, the number they already had after the 2001-02 sesason.

They had failed to win in titles in 2003 and 2004, in part because they didn’t mesh well on the court, but also because their supporting cast was weak.

At the end of the 2003-04 season, they were done, done, done. Sick to death of each other. Sick of the ongoing debate of “whose team” the Lakers were. Sick of sharing the limelight.

Shaq wanted the offense to run through him, as it always had. Kobe was tired of being asked to make sure it happened that way.

If Shaq had not been traded, Kobe almost certainly would have signed with the Clippers. So the idea that they could (or would) have won more titles had they remained together … just doesn’t jibe with the reality of the Summer of 2004.

It’s nice to think of the successes they had together, including the three consecutive championships. But Kobe, circa 2004, needed to be The Man and Shaq was standing in his way.  Something had to give, and that was Shaq being traded to Miami for Lamar Odom, etc.

At the end, they couldn’t stand each other, and O’Neal went out of his way to poormouth Kobe. He got even more irked when he discovered that Kobe had mentioned his name to authorities while being interrogated following Bryant’s arrest for rape.

So, sure, it’s nice that they are OK with each other now (though Kobe doesn’t seem all the way back) … but it’s revisionist history to suggest they were pals tragically separated before they ran up another 2-3 NBA titles.

The Lakers had some luck winning the 2000 title. Portland (I think it was Portland – somebody corrrect me if I am wrong) had the Lakers and let them get away.
