Stumbling Across Some Bowl Games

January 3rd, 2009 · 2 Comments · College football, Hong Kong

So, yes, the cable operator on this side of the Pacific Ocean is, in fact,  showing some of the college bowl games.

But at weird hours, and all over the dial.

Right now, I’m watching the Cotton Bowl, about 12 hours later. A few days ago, I saw Iowa and South Carolina, in whatever bowl that was, at about 3 a.m.

I did not see the Rose Bowl for, maybe, the first time since I was 6 or 7 years old. It might have been televised live … I don’t actually know … but I woke up, yesterday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m. — which was 6 p.m. Jan. 1 in California, and the game was over.

Was it shown live? Here? I suppose I will never know.

There doesn’t seem to be a pattern for this, and I haven’t been able to find any sort of schedule for this cable operator.

Ack. Anyway, if I scroll through the 10 or so channels that might show college football, I might come across a game.

Like the Cotton Bowl.

When Texas Tech scored so easily the first three times, I thought they would win a shootout. But I have seen the final score, and know that their scoring machine is about to throw a rod.

I would rather see the Sugar Bowl, but it could be a network thing. I don’t think ABC (owned by the same company as ESPN, which is showing me the Cotton)  is showing the Sugar,

Anyway, Utah 31, Alabama 17? Biggest surprise in the bowl season, so far.

On the whole, the SEC looks like the best conference. And the Big 12 doesn’t seem quite as strong as it seemed.

Which means Florida probably will handle Oklahoma in the BCS title game on Thursday.

And … we’re working on a way to see that. A colleague at the IHT has figured out, the past few years, some way of getting the game live over the Internet. So I may go over to his place to see that. Starts at, like, 9 a.m., the next day. Here.

So, yeah, some college bowls … just no telling where or when.

You didn’t have much of a delay on the Cotton Bowl; it was played on Friday this year (last one in the Cotton Bowl stadium). And Fox has the BCS games, including the title games, except for the Rose Bowl. Jacob’s link is excellent.
