The Lighter Side of the World Cup

June 26th, 2010 · No Comments · soccer, World Cup

My friend Shelley sent me this link a week ago, and I just now got around to looking at it, and it’s quite fun.

It’s an interpretation of the goals scored in the U.S.-England match … “re-enacted” by Lego figures.

Have a look.

What do I like about this video?

Well, it’s fun.

It’s well-made. Someone went to the effort of putting U.S. jerseys on the Americans, and numbers on the Brits … and that’s stop-action “filming”, right? Like in that ancient Christmas special they used to show in the U.S. on Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer … remember that? The one that Burl Ives narrated … and sang along with?

It also takes a bit of the gas out of the World Cup bag (and it can get seriously overinflated), and does it by overlaying the this-is-deadly-serious English-language call of the game over the silly little Lego figures shifting across the pitch.

(And I like that announcer, but stripped of the moment-in-time he seems a little too invested, even absurd with his shouts of “a captain’s goal!” and “leading from the front!” and “that will take some getting over!”)

The Robert Green gaffe, too, is well done … and given a replay! Note how Clint Dempsey did a full 360 firing off the shot.

Outstanding.

Anyway, there are more of these, if you care to look … at www.legofussball.eu

The World Cup items are at the bottom of the page.

So, maybe a bit of fun before the serious stuff, some 18 hours hence.
