‘The People Will Come’ … Times Three

October 8th, 2016 · No Comments · Angels, Baseball

I had disappeared down the YouTube rabbit hole today, when I came across some videos that might interest sports fans, and baseball fans in particular.

Renditions of the speech from the movie Field of Dreams, a soliloquy sometimes known as “The People Will Come” speech.

I have three versions of it here — one you will recognize, one you may not have known about and one that is just sort of out of the blue.

Here is the first. Have a listen.

That is, of course, James Earl Jones from the movie Field of Dreams. What a great voice. Can anyone think of another movie speech he gave which is so persuasive/moving?

In an odd way, the interruptions staged by the annoying brother-in-law character Timothy Busfield, only enhance the speech. It allows listeners to concentrate on Jones’s words, and then mull them while the whiny guy is saying things we know don’t matter.

Jones’s limited, subtle and meaningful movements, of hands and head, further enhance the speech. It is really good, and I listen to it a few times every year.

Here is the second. Have a listen.

That is, of course, the most recognizable voice in modern baseball, Vin Scully.

I did not know this existed until an hour ago, and I like it.

Vinny stresses things a bit differently than does James Earl Jones … he Scullifies it a bit, too.

He is hurt by us not being able to see him. Vinny probably would say he prefers it that way, but we saw enough Vinny on TV to know that he has some of the instincts of an actor and he would have been able to produce an enhanced version, if we had the picture as well as the words. Also, I’m not sure he saw the movie.

But great thinking on the part of the person who got him to do this.

Here is the third. Have a listen.

This is one done by a series of ballplayers, 17 in all. It is the most moving, in my opinion — which surprised me.

Something about actual professionals reciting this … it seems to come from a real and honest place. Well, for most of them.

It also gives the speech a more universal feel because it includes black players, Latin players, white players, old players, young players, superstars, average guys …

I recognized Mike Trout and Russell Martin right there at the start, and I knew only a few of the rest (those beards!) so here are the others: Cole Hamels, Prince Fielder, Jason Kipnis, Anthony Rizzo, David Robertson, Steven Vogt, Gerrit Cole, Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gomez, Christian Yelich, Alex Avila, Kolten Wong, Felix Hernandez, Dustin Pedroia and Adam Jones.

I thought Trout was good. And Vogt. And so was Cole and Cuddyer and Henandez and Pedroia and Jones.

This was, by the way, published in April of 2015.

The things you find on the internet. Once in a while they can be uplifting.
