The Vin Scully Bobblehead!

I love bobbleheads. I have confessed to this several times.

At this minute, I have two bobbleheads on my desk at The National, here in Abu Dhabi. Duke Snider and David Eckstein area a little worse for wear, given that late-night cleaners handle them roughly, but they still nod at me, and make me smile.

(I have former co-worker Michelle Gardner to thank for the Li’l Eck” doll, and she has sent me another that is en route.)

Now, we learn of the time and date of the most compelling bobblehead in the history of Southern California sports.

I am speaking, of course, of the Vin Scully bobblehead giveaway at Dodger Stadium.

This giveaway, on August 30, represents a sublime marriage of my respect and affection for Vin Scully … with the bobblehead doll.

The Dodgers will be giving away 50,000 Scully bobbleheads that night, but I have no doubt they could sell hundreds of thousands of Scully dolls.

It is extremely unlikely I will be able to attend that game, on the other side of the world from Abu Dhabi, but I would go to the Dodgers’ merchandise shop and pay hard cash for a Vinny bobblehead, if they were to stock them.

I like the Vinny bobblehead, too, because he’s sitting at a desk, just as he does when he is working in the Dodger Stadium press box. He has the microphone in his right hand, which makes sense, given that he is (as I recall) a left-hander.

Vinny has been the most valuable “Dodger” in the club’s history in Los Angeles, the one link to all the highs and lows o the club, that comfortable voice in the night, spinning stories and waxing poetic for three generations of fans.

And now we have him in bobblehead form? How great is that?

Not only would I pay for a Vinny bobblehead, I would put it inside a protective closure of some sort, so that the slings and arrow of outrageous fortune (and clumsy janitors) could not assault Vinny.

I envy all of you who will be at the yard, come August, and be handed a Vinny doll. In terms of planning your Dodger Stadium season, the words “Look who’s coming up!” have become relevant again.

Worth noting: The Dodgers realize this is such a big attraction that you can not buy single-game tickets for the Scully bobblehead. Tickets are only available to season-ticket holders or as part of a 10-game package.
