Today’s Earworm: ‘Party Like a Russian’

October 23rd, 2016 · No Comments · Earworm

Had this one in heavy rotation inside my head almost from the day it came out.

“Party Like a Russian” by the British singer Robbie Williams.

Have a look at the “official” video, which already has been seen 7.2 million times.

Have a listen/look.

Certainly, a lot of time and energy and expense was lavished on the video.

I count at least 17 female dancers and at least three sets of clothes on Williams.

What makes this earworm material?

The lyrics. The title of the song goes directly to the global image of Russian plutocrats with more money than good taste. “Have it like an oligarch” is a memorable phrase, one with which the song ends.

–The music. The song is constructed around a popular Sergei Prokofiev piece, Dance of the Knights from his Romeo and Juliet ballet. Dance of the Knights is meant to evoke a “dark atmosphere”, and it certainly does that … which jibes nicely with the lyrics.

–The video. It is a sort of visual feast, over the top — to give it that “oligarch” feel … and placed inside an ornate room and containing several costume changes among the cast.

It didn’t hurt interest in the song that Russian media suggested the song was “racist” towards Russians.

Anyway.

Listen to it again … see if it doesn’t get stuck in your head, too.
