I may have mentioned that I tweet. At … @PaulOberjuerge …
I do it almost entirely for professional reasons, to notify followers of something I have written for The National, or something a colleague has written, and sometimes just to get a news nugget out there as quickly as possible.
And I very selectively follow (fewer than half as many as follow me) those who happen to be friends or colleagues or people who are likely to have hard news on regional soccer — which is the one topic on which I might actually be able to contribute something new.
I finally got around to checking who has the most Twitter followers. Just out of morbid curiosity. And the leaders?
According to this website, the leader is (drum roll, please) … Lady Gaga, with 13.6 million followers hanging on her every word. Kinda scary. (Having trouble maintaining my puh-puh-puh-poker face.)
Second is Justin Bieber, followed by Barack Obama, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian.
(Which one doesn’t fit in that oh-so-lightweight crew?)
Anyway, I checked because I am about to follow Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the ruler of the emirate of Dubai (and the UAE vice president), and his site claims 475,000 followers — which seems like a ton, considering the country has only 8 million people and only 1 million of them are citizens.
But if he wants to crack the top 100, he needs to quintuple his followers to nearly 2.48 million — which would be enough for him to displace someone named Pete Cashmore on at No. 100.
I’m going to take a guess and say the ruler of Dubai leads the UAE in followers. And what does he tweet about (at @HHShkMohd)?
In his most recent tweet, on September 12, Sheikh Mohammed wished students and teachers the best in this coming school year and called on them to “work hard in striving for excellence.”
Does Lady Gaga ever say anything meaningful like that?
